cutaneous leishmaniasis, a parasite disease that causes nodules or sores to form on the skin,
including the skin of the face. Affected people may have a single lesion or many lesions. Sores heal
slowly over months to years and leave scars. That disease came to Stephen when he was just eight
years and it was cured an year after but the fatal thing is that that disease affected his beautiful
plumpy face and left a scar on it that made his face look worse and one even him could not see his
face for continuous five minutes, but during that age he doesn’t worried much because at that time
he had the eyes that saw his precious heart lying beneath his ugly face, the ears that listened the
words he spoke, arms that always reached for him, a heart that offered him the pure love, in all
these forms he had his mother who was very much affectionate with him. His father died when he
was two years old due to over alcoholism, and his mother at that became pauper due to the debts
that were borrowed to her husband’s medication costs but she overcame that by working as a baby
sitter.
He then went to school but no one was ready to give company to him in the school, few found
irritating to sit near with him and only few children talked with him, when his mother came to knew
all about this he ceased him from going to the school. And she taught him the subject of love; she
told him the formula of love that “if you give love to one person they will return it in the multiples”.
When she was near with him he never cared about anything and never worried for his appearance
for she told him that” The real beauty of man lays in the way he loves other people and other
creatures in the world”, his mother will go for work and he will be there in his house sometimes
painting, sometimes arranging the things in his house and sometimes washing or cleaning the dishes
and sometimes nothing except waiting for the arrival of his mother and arrival of the chocolates
which his mother will buy for him every day. His life went on like that but sometimes his mother
worried so much by looking on his face thinking how he is going to survive in this world after her,
she always prayed to god to give him another loving heart like her, when he wants to take her away
from him.
Stephen then began to have much belief in God, he felt as if some supreme power is always
planning for the activities of him and watching him always. But whenever he saw his face in the
mirror he got angry with God for two things one is for creating his face like this and other for
creating the mirror, years went on then Stephen celebrated his 16th birthday, Sometimes he went
out for the churches, sea shores, etc. But he hated travelling in the bus because whenever he went
in the bus no one sat near him moreover he was afraid to sit near other people because few reacted
to him differently they forget to see the humanity in him all they saw is the ugly face of him and
even few said to him that he got this because of all the sins that may be done by him previously.
Yet he never cared about all these because he had his mother as a shoe to walk over the broken
glasses, though God thrown away the broken glasses on his path he was happy that he gave himself
his mother as the shoe. But that doesn’t last so long God took his shoe away. By an unexpected fall
from the stair case his mother died leaving him to live in her house with solitude, as this happened
as a sudden he was first much depressed with it, though she left him she never failed in cultivating
the seeds of hope inside his heart he always remembered his mother’s words that “whenever you
get much depressed by life and if you felt that those were the worst thing that shall never happen
to anyone don’t get angry with god and hate the life but just look out for a positive way because
there will surely be some light hidden somewhere in the darkness if you are able to find that then
that’s the end of the darkness” and he knew very well that both sadness and happiness of life are
not permanent. Few months run by, after getting the salvation by himself he joined as a servant to
one of the house to which his mother previously went as the baby sitter and became the maid of the
house and to the stair case of the house in which she had her last minute.
The youngest baby of the house has now become the beautiful girl of the house, he went to the
house daily in the morning and returned to his house in the evening he felt comfortable in the house
as everyone of the house never cared about his appearance. But one day he came to knew that the
beautiful daughter of the house is having some trouble in seeing his face as she never looked onto
his face or eyes while talking, so he avoided to be noticed by her vision.
He usually had to cross a high traffic road in the evening in order to catch the bus on the other side
whenever before crosses will see for a long time on the two sides of the road until he makes sure
that no automobiles where coming against him, because he believed life is too precious to be
wasted on the roads. On the next day he as usual went to their house, as he went he saw the arrival
of the photographer to take the family photo members and he awaited that they will call him
because he believed himself as part of their family, and he went to their house as a servant not
because of the salary but because of the love he had for them, then he accidentally interrupted the
photography and the lady of the family shouted at him as “you spoiled a nice photograph with your
ugly face” hearing this he was much depressed, and he became very much anger and for the first
time in his life he felt it would be better if he had not been born in this world with full of hatred
towards his life he crossed the road without seeing whether it is clear or not, and this time he was
hit by a car and he was hurt the man who drove the car carried him immediately to the hospital,
since he was an doctor and there he asked Stephen why he was careless while crossing the road and
Stephen narrated the story of him, hearing those the doctor felt pity for him but that was not the
one which Stephen actually wanted and the doctor then said about the cosmetic surgery costing
around $20,000 using which his face can be made normal and he said to him that he arrange it for
him if he could provide at least half of the money hearing those Stephen felt some complacent in
him because he never wanted his face to look so beautiful all he wanted was that his face looking
tolerable and after that the doctor took him in his car to drop him in his home Stephen said to him
that he was scared of dogs as dogs usually barks him after seeing him, and when he stepped out of
the car a pug ran near him after seeing him Stephen scared but the pug ran near him with shaking its
tail, the doctor lamented about the dog that it usually barks on seeing people but he wondered how
could the dog be silent this time, hearing this Stephen became fond of that pug and requested him
to give the pug to him but he refused saying that he bought it just before seven days. And after
spending some time in the doctor’s house Stephen was about to leave and he started walking and
the dog followed him until he left the house. In that all his thoughts were surrounded about that
dog he was very much impressed with it, then next day he entered inside the house in order to steal
the pug, when the doctor was out he took the dog and moreover the dog was silent it haven’t
barked even once but unfortunately the watchman of the house saw him so he started running and
at last he was caught by the doctor and doctor warned him and said him clearly that he was not in a
mind to give away his new dog, Stephen left the place with dismay and humiliations.
Few days went then one day the doctor called him so he went to his house the doctor gave him
the pug saying that the “dog always barks on seeing humans except you”, with full of happiness
and excitement he took the pug to his house and he named the pug as “puppy”, puppy was reticent
while it was in his hands but as soon as it entered the house it wandered around every corner and all
the place which never people never entered as the puppy knew clearly that he is going to be the king
of that house, he became attached to puppy he gave food to it before he ate and he ate whenever
puppy ate.
Two days went like this and one day puppy by shaking its tail jumped and broke the plates which
he kept for the remembrance of his mother , so he got anger and beated puppy after two minutes
puppy came near him as usual by shaking its tail, he wondered for a minute that how God created
these kind of creatures that didn’t possess any envy, anger, indifference and those like worse
behaviours which were seen in ordinary humans, he forgot the incident there itself he felt happy
but he still had one defect in his heart he wanted to earn money in order to change his face, days
went on and by the doctor’s recommendation a millionaire accepted to offer him the cost of the
operation, then Stephen accepted that and with his puppy he went to the hospital, he kept puppy
outside though the doctor came near him it was not ready to go with him it focused on the stretcher
carrying his master inside the operation theatre, and puppy started barking with hatredness on
seeing the ordinary people’s face. Seeing that, Stephen asked the doctor a five minutes time to calm
down puppy so he went leaving puppy with him.
Few minutes later the doctor entered the operation theatre, he found that Stephen was not there
instead he found a letter in his bed, he started reading the letter in that letter he had written as “all
I wanted is a soul that surrounds me, a heart that purely loves me, an eye that sees my beauty lying
underneath my ugly face, I have got the one god had given me all these in the name of Puppy, puppy
recognises everything good in me, puppy barks on seeing other people but to puppy I am something
special that may be because of the appearance of my face, I am afraid that it may be difficult for
puppy to recognise me if I operate my face why should I needed to show myself beautiful for the
people those who never recognised the inner humanity of me I would rather remain the same for
the puppy that loves me so much as the way I am”. The doctor on seeing this felt shame on himself
and on the entire people who failed to recognise the precious humanity lying inside his ugly face
Then doctor saw Stephen leaving the hospital with lovable puppy in his hand he then took the bus
and this time he has no enough time to look whether the people around him is feeling indifferent
with him or not as he has only a scarce time to watch his puppy playing joyfully and he felt happy
when no one sat near him, because it would be comfortable for the puppy to sit there
